Early Beginnings: Manual PBX (Late 19th - Early 20th Century)
Initial Need: Following the invention of the telephone, early businesses required a way to connect multiple internal phones without having a dedicated public line for every single device.
Manual Switchboards (1870s-1960s): The first private branch exchanges (PBXs) were manual. Operators, usually in a, dedicated room, would receive an internal call and manually plug wires into a switchboard to connect to another internal extension or an external line.
